Two For One

Over the next week, as we approach our Development Review Board hearing, we thought we'd share some letters in support of Mirror Theater Ltd/GAAR. Today, on this Black Friday, we're giving you a two-for-one: two letters at once! Today's letters are by Tom Kehler and Elye Alexander. Both letters are used here with permission of the authors. Previous letters can be found here. If you would like to add your support, please email us.

"All of Our Lives Have Been Enriched"

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing in support of The Mirror Theater, the new home for the Greensboro Arts Alliance & Residency (GAAR).  I am a long-time summer resident of Greensboro and have deep roots in the community because my three children and five grandchildren are year-round residents.  All of our lives have been enriched by the opportunity to see and participate in high quality theatrical productions that Mirror has produced with great effort, energy and sacrifice over the past decade.  The new theater now under construction has been carefully planned for minimal negative impact and I believe that the theater will benefit the community significantly.

Sincerely,
Thomas Kehler

"The Start of Something Joyful"

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to express my support for the Greensboro Arts Alliance and Residency (GAAR) and its project to create a new theater and arts center for the community.

My association with GAAR began roughly a decade ago when I noticed a flyer on the bulletin board at Willey’s Store seeking community volunteers to take part in a staged reading of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Delighted by the prospect, I signed up. A few weeks later the performance took place in a local barn—fifteen or so amateur cast members with minimal props and costumes, sometimes stumbling through our lines. But we all had a blast, and so did the surprisingly large audience who came to watch. I think everyone sensed that this was the start of something joyful and important the community had been missing.

Since then I have spent easily a thousand hours involved with GAAR’s increasingly sophisticated projects bringing theater, music, and literature to Greensboro and the surrounding area. I have watched shy kids and inexperienced folks who never before had an outlet for their talents develop into skilled artists and performers. I have seen the happiness on countless local faces at what they have created.

GAAR has been a tremendous boon to the town and the region, connecting enthusiastic amateurs of all ages with talented professionals from across the northeast, and supporting the local economy by hiring skilled local artists and craftspeople and drawing audiences from the surrounding communities. The new Mirror Theater is sure to further enhance the organization’s good work and expand its potential, while also providing an ideal location for other local arts groups to stage their own events. I wholeheartedly recommend supporting this project.

Sincerely,
Elye Alexander, Craftsbury

Gratitude

On this Thanksgiving, we are giving double thanks.

We give thanks for the vibrant support of a passionate and diverse community of friends and family. And we give thanks for the incredible generosity of the donor building Greensboro's new Mirror Theater, Andrew C. Brown.

Together, like Charlie Brown and his friends in the picture above, they are an unbeatable team.

In honor of these gifts, we are sharing both a beautiful letter by Abigail Demers, who has been growing up with GAAR the past four years, as well as a small selection of the thanks we've received from the community in praise of Mr. Brown.

As Thornton Wilder once said, “We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures.” On this Thanksgiving holiday, GAAR is truly aware of our treasures. And we are grateful for them.

The GAAR Family

"Hi, My name is Abigail Demers. I am 12 yrs old and have been with the GAAR family since I was 8. I want to tell you how happy I am about this Beautiful Theater! I love acting and being with this group is like being a family!! I love how we get to work with a lot of the same people every summer. I feel that I get so much support from them as well as learning so much about the theater world. Please support this beautiful building. Thank you!" - Abigail Demers, Woodbury ,VT

Thank you, Mr. Brown

"Thanks so much to Mr. Brown for his amazing generosity and his willingness to correct the misconceptions. I so look forward to this incredible resource in our town." - Lynette Courtney

"Mr. Brown, I cannot thank you enough for your enormous generosity. My daughter has been a part of GAAR for 3 years now. I am so excited to watch her confidence grow as well as her passion for the theater. This gift will be such an addition to this community. I am so excited to watch GAAR grow to an even more exciting place!!" - Ellen Demers

"Mr. Brown is really a classy gentleman. There are not many in this world." - Rita Salzman

"Thank you, Andrew!" - Anne Stevens

Enjoy Your Holiday!

"A Wonderful Feature of This Community"

Over the next week, as we approach our Development Review Board hearing, we thought we'd share some letters in support of Mirror Theater Ltd/GAAR. Today’s letter is by Eric Erwin, the wonderful principal of Lakeview Union School. This letter is used here with permission of the author. Previous letters can be found here. If you would like to add your support, please email us.

"To the Development Review Board of Greensboro:

Thank you for the opportunity to share my thoughts about addition of a new theater for our community. I hope this letter provides the information and feedback you are interested in.

I accepted the position of principal of Lakeview School in July, 2013. I continue to be impressed with the strong community spirit demonstrated by Greensboro residents. The support of our school, and the students who attend, continues to be a wonderful feature of this community.  As you may know, students attending Lakeview Elementary come from a wide variety of backgrounds, and vary in their exposure to theater and the arts. Our school addresses this disparity by providing art and music classes to all students, a choral program for grades 5-6, and a universal instrumental program for all students in fifth and six grade. We have many students who demonstrate a strong talent and interest in the performing arts, but limited opportunities to explore them. Community programs such as GAAR have stepped in to fill this gap, and provide students from Lakeview and their families new and exciting ways of participating in the performing arts and expanding their skills.

Despite these wonderful efforts, GAAR and other groups have primarily been able to provide opportunities in the summer months, and this makes it difficult for classroom teachers to explore ways of integrating the performing arts into the yearly curriculum. Research consistently shows that theater and music performance opportunities enhance student engagement,  increase student learning in writing and reading, and decrease drop-out rates among at-risk populations of students.

The addition of a permanent structure dedicated to theater, funded in large part by the generosity of Andrew C. Brown, would allow Lakeview Union School to develop on-going partnerships with GAAR, participate in theater productions all year long, and increase the students’ exposure to theater productions in a more cost effective manner. Currently, we have to hire buses at significant expense to attend theater productions in Burlington.

I can envision many additional opportunities in this partnership- e.g., having 6th graders write a play for general performance, incorporating formal acting lessons into our physical education curriculum, using theater to help younger students increase their understanding of literature pieces, etc. I strongly support this project.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions, or would like more information.

Sincerely,

Eric J. Erwin, Ph.D.
Principal, Lakeview Union School"
